I've been thinking about Favorites today. The reason being is that my youngest child is always saying "such and such is my favorite". Now this would be okay but it seems she has 10 favorites of everything so I am constantly telling her a "favorite" is one thing that if you had to choose to have only one thing forever, what would it be. She doesn't get it. And honestly why should she. Which brought me to my favorites list. I DON'T have a favorite ANYTHING.. I, too, have a multiple list.
There is the age old question posed, "If you were stranded on an island, what 3 things would you choose to have with you?" Well in the first place, I hope to never put myself in a position to be stranded on an island. But if for some reason it ever happened, I have no idea where to start making such a short list. Another questioned asked is "If you had to choose your last meal, what would it be?" Again, I hope that when my time comes, I would spend my last moments telling the ones I loved how much I loved them not picking al a carte items from a menu. But in order to play the question game, again, I have no answer.
You see, I can't simply choose a favorite anything. I really, really like a lot of stuff. I have never had a favorite color because I think most colors are beautiful and have their place. I don't have one specific food that I would want to eat forever or for a last meal. How boring and sad would that be? I don't have a favorite movie. There are a lot of movies I really like but not one that if you asked me, I could say with confidence. Books? Yeah, I have read libraries full so picking one would be like picking one star out of the sky. Friends... Ahh now we're getting somewhere. I have been blessed with friendship. And to pick one out of the hundreds would be like choosing a single blade of grass. Each person is a friend for a different reason. The ones that are my closest know my strengths and weaknesses. They have seen me shine as well as burn out. They have lifted me up in prayer and laughter. They have held my hand and kicked my butt back into shape. They have laughed with me and cried with me. They know my secrets and my dreams. They love me "warts" and all. So, no, I don't have one best friend, I have many and I love each of them dearly.
Does not having one favorite in each category make me indecisive? Do I care? nope, I don't.. I like having choices. I love the fact that I don't have to choose one of something. So the next time my daughter tells me one day that McDonald's is her favorite and the very next day she says Sonic is her favorite I'm not going to correct her. She's entitled and she is right.
Life is a smorgasbord of colors, books, movies, songs, food, places and people, etc... It's all out there for us to enjoy. Sample something today, it may just become your new favorite.
Hello my friend... I didn't know you dabbled in Bloggerville. And here you have! What a wonderful commentary on "favorite" that makes it okay to have several. Write more! Love you!!!! ~Tam (one of the BFF's)
